This paper introduces a genealogy of a contemporary modality of power operative across finance capital and the security state, but most especially the new informatics at work in social media and big data. To move beyond the familiar summative clichés for this latter constellation of practices ('the information age' or 'the internet society') we need to follow Foucauldian genealogy in order to interrogate a political shift in the very nature of power itself. We find ourselves midst a new form of power that originally emerged within the context of biopower but has recently assumed a gravity all its own: infopower.

Although tourism has been neglected – at least by German social science and cultural studies – it is nonetheless one of the most important global cultural practices. Yet it is difficult to determine what characterizes touristic practices themselves. We tend to talk about a demand for the extra-quotidian, the exotic or an antidote to the world of work – a demand that requires a change of location. The everyday infrastructural conditions for this mobility, however, usually remain invisible (at least as long as they do not become a spectacular attraction in their own right) or are regarded as mere means to an end. This talk looks into the materiality of frequently overlooked everyday infrastructures of tourism (for example transport and communication structures). It develops the thesis that the sensory experience of such infrastructures is in fact at the center of the tourist experience.

There's been much recent interest in "making visible the invisible," in manifesting the "optics" of subterranean, covert, and seemingly immaterial infrastructures. In this talk, I begin by addressing what we can learn about urban infrastructure by engaging it with our "other" senses – by listening to it, touching it, even smelling and tasting it. I then examine how these aesthetics "scale down" by examining infrastructure of a smaller dimension: that of furniture. I share some preliminary case studies from my current research on "intellectual furnishings," which explores how the design of our media-organizational devices – from book stacks to computer server racks – scaffolds our media technologies, informs how bodies relate to those media, and embodies knowledge. These infrastructures, both physical and intellectual, are also simultaneously functional, affective and aesthetic.

What are the media-technological criteria for free speech? In this talk, I examine the concept of "critical infrastructure," in the sense of various types of media apparatus necessary for the free expression of critical thought. I begin with a consideration of the concept of parrhesia, a Greek term used by Foucault to examine certain types of free speech. In a communication landscape largely mediated by software technologies and digital networks, there is a tendency to conceptualize these networks through models such as the frontier or the public square. However, considering issues such as ownership and visibility, I argue that the networks through which we communicate are really more like a shopping mall: pseudo-public spaces operated primarily by commercial business interests. Examples such as open source software and distributed mesh networks are posited as sites in which we might locate more viable spaces for speaking freely.

Eisenbahnen, Getreidesilos, Terminbörsen: Diese drei Schlagworte stehen in der Zwischenkriegszeit für den amerikanischen Kapitalismus, wie er sich im 19. Jahrhundert herausgebildet hatte. Die Eisenbahnen stehen am Anfang und zugleich im Zentrum dieses Dreiecks. Die Telegraphen- und Eisenbahngesellschaften waren die ersten Unternehmen, welche den Beruf des Managers erfunden hatten, um die geographisch weit verstreuten Operationseinheiten zu koordinieren. Doch es waren die Getreidespeicher, welche die Basis des expandierenden Geschäftsfeldes der Eisenbahngesellschaften darstellten. Am Ende dieser Verwertungskette standen die Getreidebörsen. Der Vortrag skizziert anhand einer Analyse von Ingenieursfachzeitschriften, Handbüchern, Regierungsdokumenten, Filmen und Literatur die Politik und Poetik des Getreidespeichers. Es geht dabei auch um den Versuch einer Geschichte des Kapitalismus mittels eines Blicks auf die logistischen Infrastrukturen der Moderne und der Spätmoderne. Welcher Blick entsteht, wenn wir die Weltwirtschaft als materielle Kultur zu erfassen versuchen? Welche Narrative und Bildprogramme haben die Ingenieurswissenschaften, welche diese Infrastrukturen entwickelt haben, hervorgebracht? Was wird dabei sichtbar? Und was bleibt verborgen?
